About the Paddock Wife

What the racing form won't tell you.

Let me guess — you didn't grow up dreaming about race day. You met someone who did.

That's my story too. My name is Katie and I married into the sport.

My husband doesn't just love horse racing — it's his career. It's his world in every sense of the word. The horses, the industry, the people, the culture — we don't just attend race day, we live it. And somewhere along the way, I stopped being a spectator and became something else entirely.

The planner. The coordinator. The one fielding seventeen texts from out-of-town guests asking what to wear, where to stay, and whether they really need to arrive that early. Spoiler: yes, you really do.

What I've learned from years inside this industry surprised even me. Race day — whether it's the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, or the Belmont — is one of the most spectacular experiences you can have. The energy, the fashion, the tradition, the sheer pageantry of it all. There is nothing quite like it. And before you know it, what starts as showing up for someone else becomes a passion entirely your own.

But there's a whole side of it that never makes it into the racing form.

Which hotel is actually worth the splurge? What do you really wear to each race? Where do you eat when you don't want another hot dog? How do you place a bet without embarrassing yourself? How do you make sure your out-of-town guests have the time of their lives?

That's what this blog is for.

The Paddock Wife is your insider guide to the full race day experience — the style, the strategy, the logistics, and all the little details that turn a good day at the track into an unforgettable one. Written from the perspective of someone with a front row seat to this industry, who has learned most of this the hard way so you don't have to.

The racing form will tell you who to bet on.

I'll tell you everything else.

Welcome to the paddock, ladies. 🐴
